Most garden makeovers fail at the brief stage. The customer asks for 'a new patio' and ends up with one that's too small, in the wrong spot, with no thought given to drainage, view, sun path or how the table actually fits. Our landscaping work starts with how you want to use the garden — not what we want to build.
We design and install patios, paths, garden walls, raised beds, sleeper edging, decking, drainage runs, full garden re-grades and complete transformations. Every project is run by one person — Mark — from first visit to final brush.
It matters who you choose because landscaping is buried work. Once the slabs are down or the wall is up you can't see what's underneath. A poorly bedded patio rocks within two winters; a wall built without a footing topples in five. We document the build-up and you get photos of the prep before anything is covered.
Why It Matters
Most of the worst jobs we've been called to rescue look fine for the first year. Year two is when the corners come back to bite.
Spot-bedded slabs on dabs of mortar inevitably rock and crack. Proper full-bed mortar on a compacted Type 1 base is the only way to get 25-year life.
A 1:80 fall away from the house is non-negotiable. Get it wrong and water runs into your air-bricks and against your damp course — thousands in damp damage.
Garden retaining walls need a concrete strip footing below frost line. Built on topsoil they bow within a couple of winters.
Sand-jointed patios without proper jointing compound are mossy and weeded within a year. Resin or polymeric jointing is standard on our jobs.

In Detail
Here's the full range of hard- and soft-landscaping work we cover, with the technical specs we build to.
Indian sandstone, porcelain, granite setts, concrete flags and natural Scottish stone. Build-up: 150mm Type 1 MOT compacted in 50mm layers, 40mm full-bed mortar (not dabs), polymeric or resin jointing, falls at 1:80 minimum away from any structure. 5-year guarantee.
Block paving, resin-bound aggregate, stepping stones, gravel paths with timber or steel edging. Same sub-base standard as patios. Resin-bound is becoming a popular choice in Ayrshire for low-maintenance front paths.
Brick, block-and-render, dry-stone style and sleeper retaining walls. All walls over 600mm get a concrete strip footing to 450mm depth. Retaining walls over 1.2m are designed with drainage gravel and weep holes to release water pressure.
Composite (Trex-style, 25-year warranty) and treated softwood with stainless steel fixings. Joists at 400mm centres on adjustable pedestal feet for level installation. We don't lay deck directly on grass.
Pressure-treated softwood or hardwood oak sleepers, screwed and pinned, lined with weed membrane and filled with screened topsoil. Heights from 200mm border edging to 800mm seating-height beds.
French drains, soakaways, perforated land drain and ACO channel drains across patio edges. We size all drainage to a 1-in-30-year rainfall event using current SEPA data.
Topsoil import, levelling, turfing and planting. We work with a Kilmarnock-based nursery for native and ornamental planting recommendations.
Commercial landscaping (hotels, holiday parks, pub gardens) is delivered with full RAMS, daily site reports and CDM compliance on projects over £25k.
