The Service
Timber decking gets a bad reputation because so much of it is laid and forgotten. Within two seasons it's grey, the boards are velvety with algae, and after a shower it's like walking on ice. Most of that is fixable — and once treated properly, decking needs only a light annual wash to stay great.
Our decking cleaning uses oxygen-bleach-based timber cleaner (not chlorine, which damages timber fibres) and a wood-safe rotary head at low pressure. The grey UV-damaged surface layer lifts, the original colour comes back, and the slip risk goes.
Optional add-ons include light sanding for boards that have splintered, full strip-back of failing oil or stain, and a fresh re-oil or re-stain in the same visit. Composite decking gets a gentler treatment — neutral cleaner and a soft brush, no rotary.
Why It Matters
Slippery decking is one of the most common home-injury claims in the UK. It's also one of the easiest to fix.
Algae-coated decking in wet weather has less grip than wet ice. A&E sees these injuries every winter — and home insurance can argue you knew about the hazard.
Algae and damp held against timber accelerates rot. A deck that could last 25 years can fail in 8 if never maintained.
UV-damaged surface fibres split. Bare feet and dogs find every splinter. Screws lift as boards cup, becoming a trip hazard.
Replacing a deck costs 8-15× the cost of an annual clean and re-oil. Maintain the surface and the substructure outlasts you.
Our Process
01
Fixed price by m² after a quick look or a photo. We identify the timber type and current finish so we use the right system.
02
Wood-safe cleaner applied and given dwell time to lift algae, biofilm and grey UV layer.
03
Wood-safe rotary head with hot water — even, no banding, no scoring. Boards rinsed clean with the grain.
04
Light belt-sanding for splintered or rough boards. Full strip if existing finish is failing.
05
Premium decking oil (Osmo, Ronseal) or solid-colour deck stain applied in the right weather window.

In Detail
Decking varies hugely. Softwood, hardwood, composite — each one needs a different system. Here's what we use.
Oxygen-bleach cleaner + wood-safe rotary at 80-100 bar. Sanding optional if boards are splintering. Re-oil with Osmo Decking Oil or Ronseal — typically 2 coats, brushed in the grain.
Same gentle method but with hardwood-specific oil for re-finishing. Hardwood deck often goes a beautiful silver-grey naturally and can be left unoiled if that's the look you want — we'll discuss preference.
Soft brush and neutral pH composite cleaner — never rotary, never bleach. Composite that's gone mossy in shaded corners cleans up easily with the right approach. No oil or stain needed.
Belt sander for badly splintered or rough boards. Edges and grooves done by hand. Sanding lifts maybe 1mm of surface and reveals fresh timber underneath — adds years to a deck.
Old solid-colour deck stains or paint that's peeling: we strip with a chemical stripper, scrape, sand and refinish. Doubles the job but the result is far better than just cleaning over the failing finish.
Oil soaks into the timber and replenishes natural protection — looks the most natural, easiest to maintain. Stain adds colour and UV protection. Decking paint gives a solid colour but peels and chips with foot traffic. We almost always recommend oil.
While we're there, we check the joists and posts for rot. Often a £100-£200 substructure repair now saves a £2,000+ deck replacement in 5 years' time.
Pub gardens, hotel terraces and holiday-let decks on annual maintenance programmes. Slip-resistance important for public liability — we provide before/after photos for the file.
